India has introduced new strict rules and guidelines for the social media platforms like Instagram, facebook, youtube and others. This new change is going to transform the landscape of tech innovations and development at a large scale.

This new IT Amendment Rules 2026, made it mandatory for social media companies to remove unlawful AI generated content. Now platforms must remove the AI generated content flagged by the courts or government under specified time.
The IT ministry also said AI generated content must be disclosed to the users by the platforms. To make it effective and protect users, mandatory labelling has been introduced under this new framework.
It means now the AI generated content must have watermarks so that users can recognize and differentiate it from the real.
Additionally, the government clarified that the social media companies must deploy tools and verification mechanisms to check authenticity of the content.
And to ensure that the platforms must embed permanent metadata or unique identifiers of AI generated content to trace back the origin source.
The government has taken this decision to deal with the growing concerns such as hyper-realistic deepfakes, misinformation, illegal content manipulations, impersonations, and other related frauds.
Under this new rule, India formally defined this type of content as “Synthetically Generated Information”. The government said, under new guidelines the social media platforms will be responsible if AI generated content is published without required watermarking.
However, the new regulatory framework has exempted the routine edits like translation, compression, color correction, and noise reduction.
India has over 1 billion internet users, which makes India a huge market for the companies like Meta, X and Google. Therefore the government of India has taken this progressive decision to monitor and regulate AI-generated content in India.
Under the IT rules and guidelines, authorities can order the removal of illegal content on the grounds of national security and public order.
This new decision will now reshape the tech space and the government can curb the misuse of AI generated content comprehensively.
