58 Tiger Reserves in India

The population of tigers was declining dramatically in the country. Therefore the government of India launched Project Tiger in 1973. It was part of India’s tiger conservation efforts which later led to the establishment of dedicated tiger reserves in the country.

What are Tiger Reserves?

Tiger Reserves are specifically designated areas that focus on the conservation of tigers and their habitats. These reserves have been created to maintain and ensure a viable natural population of tigers in the country. Every tiger reserve consists of a protected core zone, free from human activity and a buffer zone, where sustainable activities and regulated tourism are allowed.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority which was established in 2005, manages these tiger reserves.

India is home to about 70% of the global tiger population. Presently, there are 58 tiger reserves in the country.
